THIRTY-FIVE

WHEN THE CAPTAIN and his troupe of soldiers arrived, leading the stolen horses, litters had been cut from cottonwoods and the field mess tent, under Johnny’s orders, had been taken out of the wagon and cut up to make beds for the three litters that held the dead. Of the six wounded, three felt they could ride, so Jake and one soldier and one civilian were carefully placed in the wagon along with the extra weapons. The horses had all been watered from the water barrels, the canteens filled. A fire had been built and coffee prepared. The old farmer tended to Jake and the other two wounded. Jake’s bleeding had slowed to a slow seep, but he was still unconscious and his breathing was ragged.

Arriving at the wagon site, the Captain sat on his horse taking everything in. His emotions were very mixed. The attack on the wagon detail had been devastating and he quickly assessed how to avoid any blame. At the same time, he was very surprised at what had been done.

The Corporal approached, saluted and said, “Sir, there’s coffee,” pointing to the fire. Then remembering himself, he said, “Sir, Corporal reports eleven dead and six wounded due to an Indian attack. The dead include Sergeant Stapleton. The survivors say Sergeant Stapleton set up a really good defense and owe their lives’ to his leadership.”

This report was the one Johnny had coaxed him with earlier. He didn’t really say it outright, but led the Corporal to it. Johnny also told the Corporal he had done a good job organizing the recovery and that he planned to tell the Captain just that. An old and experienced soldier, he realized Johnny wanted to be left out of the thing. Could be the man couldn’t afford any attention be drawn to him, but no matter, the Corporal was more than happy to go along.

The Captain looked around for Johnny. Could he be so lucky Johnny was one of the dead and there would be no chance it getting out that he had warned the Captain. But he knew Johnny had taken charge upon Sergeant Stapleton’s death. The man carried himself like an officer, a senior officer at that, thought the Captain. Damn the man. Things were too well in hand for the Corporal to have done it. He saw Johnny then, standing by the wagon. He seemed to be checking on one of the wounded men.
